Question 1

Do I need to speak Japanese?

Accepted Answer

For basic travel, no. Train stations have English signage, convenience stores are intuitive, and Google Translate handles menus. For live houses, some Japanese helps but isn't required. Pointing at the flyer at the door works. We provide advance list instructions in English when you subscribe.

Question 2

What kind of electrical outlets does Japan use?

Accepted Answer

Japan uses Type A plugs (two flat prongs), same as the US and Canada. Voltage is 100V. Most modern phone chargers and laptop adapters handle 100-240V, so you won't need a converter for those. Check your charger's label. Hair dryers and other appliances may need a voltage converter.

Question 3

How do I get WiFi in Japan?

Accepted Answer

Rent a pocket WiFi device at the airport (Global WiFi, WiFi Rental Japan) or get an eSIM before you arrive (Ubigi, Airalo). Pocket WiFi is the most reliable option. Free WiFi in Japan is limited and unreliable outside train stations and convenience stores. Budget about $5-8/day for pocket WiFi.

Question 4

What should I pack for a music-focused trip?

Accepted Answer

Comfortable shoes — you'll walk 15,000+ steps daily. Earplugs (live houses are loud and small). Cash in yen — many small venues are cash only. A small bag that won't be in the way at shows. Layers — venues range from freezing AC to zero ventilation. Leave the big backpack at the hotel.

Question 5

Can I bring my medication to Japan?

Accepted Answer

Japan has strict drug import rules. Common medications like Adderall, Vyvanse, and certain cold medicines containing pseudoephedrine are prohibited. Bring a doctor's letter and keep medicines in original packaging. Check the Japanese Embassy website before you fly. This is not optional — customs will confiscate prohibited substances.

Question 6

Should I carry cash or use cards?

Accepted Answer

Carry cash. Japan has moved toward cashless payment but many live houses, small bars, and izakayas are still cash only. 7-Eleven and Post Office ATMs accept international cards reliably. Carry at least ¥10,000-20,000 at all times. Coins pile up fast — get a coin purse.

Question 7

How do I handle food allergies in Japan?

Accepted Answer

Get an allergy card in Japanese that lists your allergies. Apps like Allergy Translate or Google Translate's camera mode help. Many restaurants can accommodate if you communicate clearly. Soy, wheat, and seafood are in almost everything. Vegan and vegetarian options exist but require research. We can recommend allergy-friendly spots near venues.

Question 8

How do I find out about shows?

Accepted Answer

That's why Music in Japan exists. Built on 15 years of Kaala's scene knowledge, our free feed pulls events from 67 live house and club websites around Japan daily, with its deepest coverage in Tokyo. Subscribe to Curated for hand-picked shows. You can also check venue websites directly (most update 1-2 months ahead), X/Twitter for flyer posts, and physical flyers at venues and record shops.

Question 9

What is a live house?

Accepted Answer

A live house is a small music venue, typically 40-250 capacity. They're the backbone of Japan's music scene. Most have a permanent stage, professional PA, house backline (amps, drums), and a bar. Shows usually have 3-5 bands on a bill. The vibe is closer to a DIY basement show than a concert hall — in the best way.

Question 10

What time do shows start and end?

Accepted Answer

Most evening shows list two times: OPEN (doors) and START (first band). Typical evening show: OPEN 18:00, START 18:30, last band finishes by 21:00-21:30. Daytime shows (matinees) usually run 13:00-17:00. Late-night events can go past midnight. Shows start on time in Japan. If it says 18:30 START, the first band hits at 18:30.

Question 11

Can I take photos and videos at shows?

Accepted Answer

Usually yes, but ask or check the venue's policy. Most underground shows are fine with phone photos and short videos. Some bands prefer no flash. Recording full sets is generally frowned upon unless the band explicitly says it's okay. When in doubt, shoot the first song and put your phone away. Experience the show.

Question 12

What's the etiquette at Japanese live houses?

Accepted Answer

Don't talk during performances. Don't push to the front if you arrived late. Put your bag in the coin locker or against the wall, not on the floor where people stand. Drink tickets are common — you'll usually get one with your entry fee, redeemable at the bar for a beer or soft drink. Tipping does not exist. Be cool, be quiet between songs, lose your mind during songs.

Question 13

Can I drink and smoke at live houses?

Accepted Answer

Drinking age is 20 in Japan. Most live houses serve beer, chuhai, and soft drinks. Smoking rules vary by venue — some have designated smoking areas, some allow smoking inside (yes, still). The legal smoking age is 20. If a small venue is smoky and that bothers you, stand near the door. It's part of the atmosphere in many older spots.
