Forward performing live at a Tokyo livehouse

THE MUSIC THAT
ACTUALLY MATTERS HERE.

And how to get into the rooms where it’s happening. Kaala has been in this scene since 2013. We’ve been here since 2011 — booking, touring, playing, running it. Music in Japan is the guide we wish existed when we got here. Every basement, every bill, every night. From metal to free jazz, hardcore to noise, punk to the stuff nobody’s named yet.

BORN FROM KAALA.

Kaala started in 2013 as an independent label for the bands nobody else in Tokyo was willing to touch — Oser. Retch. Self Deconstruction. GUEVNNA. The loud, weird, extreme, unprofitable music that was the most interesting stuff happening here.

Thirteen years later, we’ve toured Japan with half these bands, stood on every stage in every basement worth standing on, and learned — by showing up, night after night — how this scene actually works.

Music in Japan is what we built after people kept asking: “how do you find this stuff?”

That experience travels. Music in Japan covers the full spectrum — metal to classical, hip-hop to noise, experimental to whatever hasn’t been named yet. Not because we know every genre. Because we understand how music ecosystems work.

EVERY BASEMENT. EVERY BILL. EVERY NIGHT.

Tokyo has more underground shows per week than most cities have per year. Finding them is the hard part — Japanese livehouses don’t post on the platforms you use, and most lineups are announced on Twitter in Japanese with a blurry flyer photo.

We scrape shows across 24 livehouses in Tokyo. Metal, punk, hardcore, noise, grind, doom, crust, power violence, blackened everything. Filtered by genre, date, venue, and neighborhood. Updated daily.

WE GO TO 200+ SHOWS A YEAR. HERE’S WHAT WE’D PICK FOR YOU.

The calendar is free. But if you want someone who knows the scene to cut through the noise — that’s Curated. Every week, subscribers get hand-picked show recommendations with context: who’s playing, why it matters, what to expect, and how to get advance tickets before they’re gone.

No algorithm. No sponsored placements. Just years of going to shows in this city, distilled into a weekly briefing.

SKIP THE DOOR PRICE. GET ON THE LIST.

In Japan, advance tickets (前売り) are almost always cheaper than door. But buying them usually requires navigating Japanese-only ticket platforms or messaging a band directly on Twitter.

Pick a show, we put you on the list. You show up, pay the lower advance price, and walk in. $10 per event, or free with Dedicated membership.

YOUR BAND. JAPANESE STAGES.

We’ve booked tours for bands from the US, Europe, Australia, and Southeast Asia. We know the promoters, the livehouses, the backline situations, the visa questions, and the after-party spots.

We already have the calendar, the recommendations, and the advance ticket hookup.
