About

MORTIFY formed in the summer of 2017, almost by accident. Vocalist Adam Jennings had been touring Japan with his Chicago sludge outfit Disrotted and connected with drummer Ryo (Final Exit, su19b) through overlapping underground circuits. Within a week of Adam relocating from Illinois to Tokyo, the two were writing together. Guitarist Tak (ex-Coffins, Trikorona) completed the lineup, and the band wasted no time laying down a demo that same year. The formula is blunt and uncompromising: HM-2-drenched Swedish death metal tone welded to short, sharp grindcore structures. Most songs clock in well under a minute. Their debut full-length, Stench of Swedish Buzzsaw (2019), packed 22 tracks into 12 minutes. The follow-up EP Grotesque Buzzsaw Defilement (2021) crammed 13 songs into nine and a half minutes. They have continued releasing splits and EPs at a steady pace, working with labels like Obliteration Records, Horror Pain Gore Death Productions, and 625 Thrash. Lyrically, MORTIFY deals in campy, tongue-in-cheek gore in the tradition of Impetigo, Haemorrhage, and Dead Infection — crucified zombies, maggot-stuffed burritos, mucous burgers, and similar horrors delivered with a wink. Adam has been explicit about avoiding misogynistic content, keeping the gore absurdist and comedic. The band has played Obscene Extreme Festival and Asakusa Deathfest, cementing their place as one of the hardest-working grind acts in the Tokyo underground.
