Ibaraki-born hardcore punk fusing raw '80s energy with Showa-era kayokyoku melody â a Tokyo underground staple.
About
çµè¡ (KEIKETSU) is a hardcore punk band born out of Ibaraki Prefecture that has become a fixture of the Tokyo underground. The name translates to 'menstrual blood,' and the music is just as confrontational: Showa-era style hardcore punk that blends raw, '80s-rooted aggression with the melodic structures of classic Japanese popular song (kayokyoku). Maximum Rocknroll described their approach as 'confident experimentalism,' noting how they play with rhythm and time signature while incorporating garage, surf-rock elements, and balladic passages without ever losing their edge. Their debut full-length Scapegoat dropped in 2017 on the band's own Hikan Label, and was later repressed on vinyl by Break The Records in a run of 500. A 7-inch single, Double Bind, followed, along with a three-way split LP (Croon a Lullaby) with Eyescream and No No No that sold out immediately. Their second album, kankai, arrived in June 2022 â 14 tracks written during the pandemic, themed around the urgency of rushing through life. Lyrics are exclusively in Japanese and have been praised for shedding light on 'a certain humanness and a worldview with a glimpse of true reality.' The sound alternates between cathartic mid-tempos with a strong '80s punk backbone and full-bore hardcore blasts. KEIKETSU operates at the intersection of nostalgia and fury â deeply rooted in Japanese musical tradition while remaining unmistakably punk.
