About

老人の仕事 (Roujin no Shigoto, literally "The Old Man's Work") is a Tokyo-based instrumental doom outfit that emerged around 2017, assembled from members of killie, johann, CxPxS, and GROUNDCOVER. They describe themselves as a "four-piece tribal doom rock band," but that undersells the weirdness. Their live shows are the stuff of Tokyo underground legend — the band performs in woolly costumes with glowing eyes, looking like swamp creatures summoned from some forgotten Shinto nightmare, laying down repetitive, hypnotic riffs that function more as ritual than rock concert. Their discography spans three albums, each titled with a Japanese numeral — 一 (one, 2017), 二 (two), and 三 (three, released on Otonashi Records in 2025). The music is purely instrumental, built on crushing doom riffs that mutate into psychedelic passages, with composition approaches that critics note are "well thought out" rather than generic doom-riff recycling. The third album marked their first release as an official four-piece, welcoming back Ataro of GROUNDCOVER. They've shared stages with international heavyweights like Lionize, Hoopsnake, and GUEVNNA, and earned a reputation as Tokyo's most compelling stoner doom act. They deliberately avoid streaming platforms — you find their music on Bandcamp or you track down the physical releases. That obstinance is part of the appeal. The band's tagline says it plainly: "We are from the future. We are only interested in what's inside you."
