About

Abigail crawled out of Tokyo in January 1992 when Yasuyuki Suzuki (vocals/guitar/bass), Youhei (drums), and Yasunori (guitar) decided the world needed a Japanese answer to Venom, Bathory, and Sarcofago. What they built over the next three-plus decades is one of the most prolific and unapologetically filthy catalogs in underground metal -- six studio albums starting with Intercourse & Lust (1996), plus a staggering number of splits, EPs, live tapes, and compilation appearances that would take a dedicated archivist to fully catalog. Yasuyuki calls the style 'street metal,' which captures the raw, first-take energy better than any genre tag. The band's lyrical territory covers war, sex, alcohol, death, Satanism, and partying -- often simultaneously. Early material leaned into sinister Yakuza black metal territory before the later period evolved into what fans know as 'sexual-coholic street metal thrash.' Yasuyuki's list of influences reads like a curriculum for extreme metal 101: Bulldozer, Carnivore, Sodom, Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, Mercyful Fate, Beherit, VON, plus curveballs like Misfits, Terveet Kadet, and GG Allin. Joel Grind of Toxic Holocaust has performed as a live member and collaborates with Yasuyuki in the side project Tiger Junkies. Abigail have been a flagship act on Nuclear War Now! Productions and have toured internationally with regularity, hitting Europe most recently in late 2024 with Perpetual Warfare and Black Mass. Their official web store doubles as the storefront for Barbatos, Yasuyuki's equally prolific speed metal side project. In a scene full of bands chasing credibility through scarcity, Abigail just keep releasing records and playing shows -- quantity and quality, no contradictions.
